Winter RV Living in Southeast Texas: What to Expect — Jus Passn Thru RV Park, Pasadena TX

One of the biggest advantages of RV living in Southeast Texas is the winter. While much of the country is dealing with frozen pipes, snow, and sub-zero temperatures, the Houston area typically sees mild, comfortable conditions from November through February — with a few notable exceptions.

Here's what to expect if you're planning to stay in your RV through the winter months in the Pasadena and Southeast Houston area.

What Southeast Texas Winters Are Actually Like

The Houston area sits in USDA Hardiness Zone 9a, which means mild winters are the norm. Typical conditions from November through February:

November: Daytime highs in the 65–75°F range, overnight lows in the 45–55°F range. This is arguably the best month of the year in Southeast Texas — warm enough to be comfortable outside, cool enough to sleep well.

December: Daytime highs in the 55–65°F range, overnight lows in the 40–50°F range. Occasional cold fronts can push overnight lows into the 30s, but these typically last only a day or two before temperatures rebound.

January: The coldest month. Daytime highs in the 55–65°F range, overnight lows in the 35–45°F range. Cold fronts are more frequent and can occasionally bring overnight lows into the upper 20s.

February: Similar to January, with gradual warming toward the end of the month. Spring-like days become more frequent in late February.

The Freeze Risk: What 2021 Taught Everyone

The February 2021 winter storm (Winter Storm Uri) was a once-in-a-generation event for Southeast Texas — temperatures dropped into the single digits and stayed there for days, causing widespread pipe failures and power outages across the region.

While events of that magnitude are rare, they're not impossible. RV residents in Southeast Texas should be prepared for occasional hard freezes, even if they're uncommon.

Freeze preparation for your RV:

  • Insulate your water hose connection. A foam pipe insulator on your water hose and the spigot connection is cheap insurance against a hard freeze. Remove and drain the hose if temperatures are forecast to stay below 28°F for more than a few hours.
  • Know how to use your RV's internal water system. If a hard freeze is forecast, disconnect from city water and use your fresh water tank. Run your water pump and keep a slow drip going from a faucet to prevent freezing in your lines.
  • Skirt your RV. RV skirting — foam board, vinyl, or fabric panels around the base of your rig — significantly reduces heat loss from the underbelly and protects exposed pipes and tanks. It's worth installing for any stay that extends into January or February.
  • Keep your furnace running. Don't let your RV get below 40°F inside, even when you're away. A frozen holding tank or water line is an expensive repair.
  • Have a backup heat source. A small electric space heater as a supplement to your propane furnace is useful during extended cold snaps.

Heating Your RV in Southeast Texas

For most of the winter, your RV's furnace will handle the cold without issue. A few things to keep in mind:

Propane furnaces are efficient but use propane. Keep an eye on your propane level during cold stretches. Running out of propane on a cold night is uncomfortable and avoidable.

Electric heat is an option at full hookup sites. If you have a heat pump or electric space heater, you can supplement or replace propane heat with electricity. At Jus Passn Thru, monthly residents pay for electricity based on actual usage — electric heat will increase your bill, but it's often more cost-effective than propane during mild cold snaps.

Condensation management. Cold weather increases condensation inside your RV. Run a small dehumidifier or crack a vent slightly to manage moisture — condensation that accumulates over weeks can cause mold and damage.

What's Great About Southeast Texas Winters

Despite the occasional cold snap, Southeast Texas winters have a lot going for them for RV residents:

Outdoor activities are at their best. The trails, parks, and outdoor attractions that are miserable in July are genuinely enjoyable from November through February. Galveston, Kemah, and the bayou trails near the park are all excellent in winter.

No snow or ice to deal with. The vast majority of Southeast Texas winters involve zero snow or ice. You're not scraping windshields, you're not driving on icy roads, and you're not worrying about your rig getting stuck.

Lower electricity costs. Without air conditioning running, your electric bill drops significantly in winter. Monthly residents at Jus Passn Thru typically see their lowest electricity bills from November through February.

Snowbird community. Southeast Texas is a popular destination for RV snowbirds from northern states and Canada. The winter months bring an influx of experienced RV travelers who add to the community atmosphere at parks throughout the region.

Winter Turnaround Season

For contract workers, winter is actually an active turnaround period in the Houston corridor. Many facilities schedule maintenance work in November and December to prepare for winter operational demands, and some major turnarounds extend into January.

Winter turnarounds in Southeast Texas are generally more comfortable than summer work — the heat is manageable, and the shorter days mean less sun exposure during outdoor work. Workers who've done both summer and winter turnarounds in the corridor consistently prefer the fall/winter season.
